L4D2 first impressions

So I've played through two campaigns, did a little with the "scavenger" mode and, this morning, messed around a little bit with the "realism" mode.

First, I was never that impressed with L4D and I ended up just getting fucking sick of it. I appreciate the attempts that they made to spice it up, but honestly I just don't think it's for me.

It seems that L4D2 is the result of Valve just dumping all the spices into the pot. This, on the surface, definitely works for me. The added weapons are a nice addition. I'm not sure how I feel about the new special infected, because I haven't messed around with versus mode yet. The levels...I don't know. The levels don't really impress me that much, but I do like how they've made it more than just "run to the end" by giving you little jobs to do. The graphics seem to be kicked up a tad. So far "realism" mode is my favorite new aspect.

Do I like it more than L4D? Yea, and I don't know if I'll ever pick that back up. But in the end, I still just feel like it's all window-dressing. I'm not blown away and I'm not even really that impressed. It's still the same premise that I didn't really care about in the first L4D. Still killing unending hordes that keep me from walking when they hit me from behind. Really. How does that even make sense? If you are punching me in the back and I start running forward, I'm going to get away from you.

I don't know. Maybe it'll grow on me.

  1. i've only played it twice. i'm sure i will play it a fair amount but i'm not all too into it.

I feel like i payed twice for the game i should've gotten the first time around. It feels no different to me. How hard is it to put damage, a new graphic and animation on a melee and call it a new feature?

The level design feels much better, but it's not any different than what basement indie designers were making for the first installment with the SDK release. Also, I see no helms deep campaign...

I liked the way they designed hard rain, but it also feels like a few ambiguous locations slapped together with a connected overpass route and a stock finale. The rain effects, however, were impressive and made things much more difficult.

they've simply put a mask and update on the form and function of the first and called it new.

    then again, i'm inherently negative...

I do enjoy the game and like i said, will probably put a good amount of time into as i did with the first, BUT... let me put it this way: I'm really glad i waited for the four pack to buy this game.

on a positive note: we may never have seen each other naked had it not been for l4d. The absolute best part of the game to me is that you have to rely on a team to progress. It's the only game that really forces that ethic. Also, playing with everyone on in VS. is the best night of my life.

    i love you

  2. I played through the first campagin and thought it was pretty great and that was with ernesto and two bots. Realism mode sounds very good (see RPS review) and I like that it forces much more team communication. I want to try that soon. I like the special infected and the redesigned models. I love the dismemberment. I love the melee weapons. The chainsaw is flipping sweet. I'd much rather be playing this game than MW2. Also, Sean's last paragraph basically explains why I don't give a shit how unfishing L4D was or how I don't care that this one came out so soon.

    Tonight, we game.
